Like all
the parents with children at Faith Christian Learning Center, I really like
the smaller class sizes. I also appreciate the fact that, even though the
classes are smaller, they still include three adults who are always ready
to encourage, explain, and help.
Students at Faith Christian work at their own pace, using programmed instruction
materials that are, appropriately enough, called Paces. Working at their
own speed means that students don't become bored by a subject they already
know. On the other hand, if they are having trouble grasping some concept
or fact, they can always get help exactly at the point that it is needed.
We made the switch to FCLC when my son's grades fell from A's to D's in
just six weeks. We knew something had to be done or my son was in real danger
of forever being left behind by an educational system that, after all, is
forced to accommodate itself to the needs of average students. We enrolled
my son in FCLC and the results were sudden and dramatic. Not only did he
begin to progress rapidly in his studies, but he really loved the school.
In fact, my son's experience at FCLC was so positive that we enrolled my
daughter the next year. Both children have made a lot of new friends and
are thriving in their schooling experiences. Going to school no longer seems
a drudgery or some despised chore. The educational environment is earnestly
cheerful and pleasant; the social environment is friendly and gracious.
My daughter even likes attending the monthly parents' meetings with us and
taking advantage of the opportunity to hang out with friends that the additional
time on campus provides.
One of the great things about education at FCLC is that the educational
process seems so intelligent. Every day each of my children brings me a
homework slip that lays out very clearly what the goals were for that day
and the extent to which the goals were met. So the homework that must be
done each evening is simply the clear difference between what the children
needed to accomplish and what they, in fact, were able to finish.

as human beings. What an advantage any child would have to learn in
the kind of structured, intelligent, loving, and compassionate educational
program that FCLC provides! |
A particularly great component of this learning is that children are required
to correct their own work so they know exactly what questions they missed.
After they are finished, an adult double-checks on their scorecard to keep
them honest. If they didn't do well on the checkup, students don't flunk
or anything. They just go back through the materials again and, when finished,
they take the checkup exam again.
I think this is a wonderful process! The greatest outcome of any testing
must surely be to show students whether or not they are successfully grasping
the materials they are supposed to be learning. Making corrections to their
own tests forces the children to see what they missed in order to identify
exactly what they didn't understand.
Nothing is ever done through the FCLC program on any teacher's whim; there's
no opportunity for the kind of harshness or laxity that all of us experienced
when we were learners in public schools. Our kids sign a contract at the
beginning of each quarter for the amount of work they agree to accomplish.
The work gets broken down into daily assignments, and then the kids just
go ahead and every day just do the next one.
Teachers meet with us parents every quarter to review the experiences that
our children had during the preceding quarter. They summarize the progress
the kids have made, their accomplishments, and their challenges. They identify
any midcourse adjustments that the children or we need to make. There is
nothing wishful or uncertain in this review. Due to the nature of the instructional
design, the teachers can show us exactly how our kids are doing. This is
more information than we ever received from other schools.
Another great result from the goals and self-paced instructional materials
is that we can, with a clear conscience, take family trips right in the
middle of the school year. The kids can work on their paces and can keep
up with their goals as we travel.
They did homework in Las Vegas at the dining room table in our condo. They
worked in Hawaii by the pool or sitting on the balcony. One day Tony even
did some paces at the Star Trek convention during speeches that he wasn't
interested in. "What is he doing?" "He's doing his homework."
They're all like, "OK....That's kind of cool." (Trekkies are tolerant
of apparently aberrant behavior.) He won't do it in the airplane, however,
because he is too interested in flying.
I think all the Bible memorization that goes on during the learning is great,
as well. All the paces include Scriptures to be memorized. Students don't
just learn snippets from the Bible, they learn whole passages.
I even like the way that everyone is required to participate in things like
the Christmas and graduation programs. They have to sing even if some of
them would rather not; they aren't given the choice. Afterwards they are
often glad and proud of the part they played in the program, even if they
remain too vain to admit it.
I thank God for Faith Christian Learning Center. It is giving my children
genuine opportunities to develop into their full potential as human beings.
What an advantage any child would have to learn in the kind of structured,
intelligent, loving, and compassionate educational program that FCLC provides!
I wish I had put my kids in Faith Christian when they were in kindergarten.
