I'm
a returning teacher to FCLC, teaching in the Upper Division. I never planned to
be a teacher. I was a pastor and when my son was getting ready for Kindergarten,
I checked the Christian schools in the area and found one I liked a lot at Barstow
Christian School.
Through a series of doors that subsequently
opened and shut, an opportunity arose to move into teaching at that
school that I couldn't refuse. That was over 25 years ago, and I've
been teaching in Christian Schools ever since.
After
several years at Barstow I moved to Tabernacle Baptist School in Concord,
where I taught for nine years. After that I taught a couple of years
at Faith Christian and then began a ten-year teaching stint at North
Hills Christian School in Vallejo and now find myself back at Faith
Christian.
Besides teaching I am also a professor in an Internet Based
theology training program and am mentoring students throughout the U.S. and the
world. I currently have a student coming for graduation from a country in Africa
I never heard of before!
After more than 25 years
of classroom teaching, I find that the concept behind the individualized
instruction is superb. Two of my students came in from public schools
and are years behind their grade-level. The public schools gave up
on them. However, after less than two weeks I've noted remarkable
improvement on both their parts. Both have commented to me that this
is the first time in a long time that school has been fun.
I recently enjoyed the experience of
watching one of them pass a test probably for the first time
in a long time.
The key to the
success of the kind of individualized pace-based instruction used
here at Faith Christian is in making learning the supreme ruler. Normal
classroom instruction situations enthrone time as the supreme ruler.
Teaching, of course, ends when the bell rings.
In the individualized learning carried out here, mastery is the ruler and learning
only ends when the student successfully demonstrates proficiency at the end of
each pace.
| I am enjoying the down-to-earth character of my students.
They are really diving in and accomplishing things. I like the fact that they
are working hard; really striving at their individual levels; and apparently working
with success. |

Of course we are trying to gather fruit for the kingdom.
When I'm an old man these kids represent the generation that will be in charge
of the world.
I think that here at Faith Christian we're giving some
of them resources to help them actually succeed at that daunting task. |
